Tending Ole Olson Spring 2017

Thank you for your interest in our Above the Falls restoration at Ole Olson. This event has reached capacity and registration is now closed. Please consider joining us at another event.

We also have several advocacy and educational events this fall, including a Northside walk to the river to support pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly connections between north Minneapolis and its riverfront September 12 and 21.

Join us as we head back to Ole Olson Park along the riverfront for a summer evening of planting and tending the native demonstration prairie garden. Located just off the bike trail the demonstration prairie is home to showy flowers and grasses will not only beautify the park but provide much-needed bee, butterfly and bird habitat. The plants also help reduce the amount of pollution flowing into the Mississippi River thanks to their deep root systems which help filter the water and hold the soil in place.

Although a small urban site, Ole Olson is home to a surprising diversity of landscapes, including riverfront shoreline, woodland terrace and grassland slopes. Working with the city parks department and relying on local volunteer power, we look forward to transforming the park into a habitat oasis — returning willows to the shoreline, wildflowers to the slopes and oaks to the terraces.

For over a decade, FMR has helped engage community members and advocate for a revitalized North and Northeast Minneapolis riverfront with improved access, habitat and community-positive development. This event is part of FMR's Above the Falls stewardship program — providing opportunities for education, access and hands-on restoration along the banks of the Mississippi River north of St. Anthony Falls. We are excited to continue to grow this program and engage citizens in the restoration process.
